In reality the mass audience just want smaller sandbox levels, to which to feel like a crazy hitman guy to live out a psycho like fantasy. Problem is the hardcore fans maybe like the bigger levels, so skew public perception. People want manageable sized levels where each feels like a single themed location, yet instead we got levels which lacked presence. Great level detail for the most part, but the general size and shape of the maps are inferior compared to blood money. This is the reason it is no longer a popular game. All the rest are way too big, yet often claustrophobic and maze-like. Which makes you more immersed and so enjoy it more.Īll of the new levels of Hitman 1 and 2 suffer from this amp issue, besides the last level of Hitman 2. So you feel more free and comfortable in the space. In contrast A new Life is bright, spacious and intuitively designed to be simple. So the map feels maze like and has the equivalent of a constant fog because of the trees. Gridlock also had a u shape to its overall map, from Gears of War, which was the games most popular multiplayer map.Īlso the Whittelcreek level has far too many trees, making visibility almost zero. The map is a square shape compared to the u shape like on A New Life. It's because the level design was just really bad. Not roaming the neighborhood visiting their neighbors BBQ and cookie sale. Everyone else is either in their homes, at work, or at Costco comparing recliner chairs and filling their faces with free samples. That's why A New Life feels like a real suburb, because there's 4-5 civilian NPCs on the entire map. That's what A New Life got right and Another Life didn't. The streets are god damn empty, except for the one or two people mowing their front lawn and the odd jogger or dog walker here and there. That stuff almost never happens in real life suburbs, even if it's like a garage sale birthday party on the 4th of July. Looking at the map design, everything is correct, but then why the heck does it feel so off. There are a bunch of almost identical cars parked both on the street and in driveways, like in real life.

There is enough front lawn in front of the houses, like in real life. So when I finally got to Whittleton Creek I was excited more than for every other level in H2.īut it felt off. When they announced the maps for H2, and I saw 'american suburb' I was excited af.Ī New Life is one of my all-time favorite Hitman levels, especially because it somehow managed to correctly capture the feel of the American HOA-controlled suburbs.
